Chasing Grace

He looks for her inside empty magic hats.
All alone in his dull swan lake mansion,
he needs just one more drop of
purity to unchain the past.
Unfortunately, he's stuck in Wonderland.

Queen Anne's Lace and mushroom heads
once peeped out from the enchanting earth
as the mad hatter and his ginger
girl played tag in the desiccated woods.
They walked to the fair where
he bought her a snowy rabbit,
even though money was scarce then.
Once upon a time, he was a real man..

Yet, now he's only a withered pawn
in some wicked woman's game;
running around with no hope.
Surrounded by fabric and scissors,
he works on a miracle because his
heart is starting to dehydrate
without darling Grace's smile.

"I'll return tonight," he told her so long ago
before leaving their thatched roof home.
And if this saddened character could
call the witch's bluff,
he would to go back to his little songbird.
But trapped in a grimy mirror,
Grace was adopted into a world
of television and school buses.
So now he has no choice but
to search between the pages
of an outdated storybook.

Getting crazier by the hour,
he can't forget the amber
gleam in her irises as
she hugged him goodbye
and perhaps someday
he'll learn to feel again
because even imprisoned
in stupid Wonderland,
Grace is still on his mind;
unmistakable and alive.
